WHAT: I can’t believe it. Looking at our pictures, it’s our 6th year in Mt Bachelor, and possibly the best one in terms of snow, fun and friends. We got really lucky as it snowed for almost the entire month of December before we arrived there. The Powder was amazing and lasting for 4 consecutive days. I can’t ski in anything else but powder now. It just slides down, you are floating over the snow.
WHERE: Mt Bachelor is on the East side of the Cascade Range in the midlde of Oregon. We go there, because the snow is usually really great, the lift tickets are very reasonable, and because it’s located near Bend, OR where we stay. The resort is on a volcano higher than the surrounding mountains, on the edge of the Eastern Cascade and the high Oregon desert to the East. And it usually gets a lot of snow. We have to sleep in Bend, OR because the skiing area is located inside the Deschute National Forest and has no habitations or towns except for Bend 15 miles to the East.
WHO: We went with some friends and a friend from our son. Both 13 yo. They ski on their own in the resort. It’s super safe, and you can literally not get lost. It’s not possible. It’s perfect for families. The lifts are simply aligned in parallel from east to west, with 2 lifts on the west that have harder black diamond slopes, otherwise to the east are mostly blues and greens, although the blues are still really fun for experienced skiers/snowboarders.
HOW: We drive from San Francisco to Bend, it’s 9 hours including a lunch stop in Mount Shasta, CA (eat there: Yaks Mount Shasta Koffee & Eatery // Google Maps). We usually book a place online. Bend is about a 30 minutes drive to the resort. That’s the one negative point about this location, but it’s the only one. We cook at home, and go eat out, take a look at some of our favorite places in Bend:
